GMC Yukon 2025: Which Engine Should You Choose?

2025-11-20

When it comes to full-size SUVs, it’s hard to beat the GMC Yukon. The model is robust, versatile, and offers a luxury experience that comes dangerously close to what you get in the Cadillac Escalade.

The 2025 GMC Yukon is available in multiple trims with pricing ranging from $95,425 to $142,510. There’s truly something for every taste and every budget. However, few people know that GMC’s full-size SUV offers three different powertrains—a level of mechanical diversity you won’t find elsewhere, giving it a serious advantage over the competition.

Three Proven Powertrains

Having tested all three, I can confidently say that each of the 2025 Yukon’s engine options has strong qualities and very few drawbacks. In fact, most of the criticisms you could make—such as fuel consumption—are more like nitpicks, and they apply to all full-size SUVs anyway.

3.0-Litre Inline-Six Diesel

Let’s start with the 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six diesel engine. This powerplant has everything going for it, from its smoothness to its generous torque and especially its fuel economy. It delivers 305 horsepower and 495 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. This combination allows the SUV to maintain an average fuel consumption of 10.7 L/100 km, which is practically surreal for a vehicle of this size. It does offer the lowest towing capacity of the lineup at 8,000 pounds, but that’s already more than enough for most buyers. This is the engine you choose for comfort and efficiency.

5.3-Litre V8

This engine is almost as old as the GMC brand itself—proof of its long-standing reliability. It’s one of the most popular engines in the brand’s history. The 5.3-litre V8 produces 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. It’s a dependable, low-maintenance powertrain, and it allows the Yukon to tow up to 8,400 pounds.

6.2-Litre V8

The 6.2-litre V8 delivers 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. Its towing capacity is slightly lower than the 5.3-litre engine at 8,100 pounds. This powertrain is chosen primarily for the smoothness and driving experience it provides. With a vehicle of this size, the extra power is certainly welcome.

The 5.3-litre V8 remains the most balanced option. However, if you spend long hours on the road, the diesel engine is the ideal choice. And if you simply want to indulge yourself, I’d recommend the 6.2-litre V8.
